Miskolc has been playing an important role in the life of the country for
the Middle Ages, then became a trade city from the small colony of the
Settlement Age. The town lived its golden ages during the Socialism when it
became a big city by the steel works and the machine factory which employed
nearly 30000 people. It is still one of the biggest towns of Hungary famous of
its festivals, special natural environment, university and Waldorf-school. We
invite you to a small walk which begins at the beautiful ruins of the medieval
castle. The castle was built by Anjou Louis the Great for a hunting castle than
for thousands of years it was an engagement present of the queens. Todays a
museum is functioning in the castle and at weekends folk-, historical-, and
cultural festivals take place there.
After the walk in the castle we get on a tram
and travel to the center of the town across Europe’s longest, 12 kilometers long
main street.
We climb up to the famous hill of Avas through
the Dark Gate and arrive at the top across a beautiful medieval cemetary
passing by a temple and Bell Tower built in the 14th century. At the top
there’s a strange socialist-realist look-out tower which became a symbol
of Miskolc in the last century and from where a beautiful view of the town can
be seen.
Backwards we arrive to the center through a winding line of cellars at the
hill side perhaps after a wine-tasting we go back to Hámor by bus.
